FAA Medical Exam Classes

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) categorizes medical exams into three primary classes based on the type of aircraft and operations involved. Each class has specific requirements and eligibility criteria:

1. First Class Medical Certificate:

  • Required for: Airline transport pilots, commercial pilots flying large aircraft (over 12,500 pounds), and flight instructors.
  • Frequency: Every six months for pilots under the age of 40 and annually for those over 40.
  • Requirements: Comprehensive examination, including vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and neurological assessments.

2. Second Class Medical Certificate:

  • Required for: Commercial pilots flying small aircraft (under 12,500 pounds), multi-engine aircraft, and flight instructors.
  • Frequency: Every year.
  • Requirements: Similar to the First Class medical, but with slightly less stringent requirements for certain tests, such as vision.

3. Third Class Medical Certificate:

  • Required for: Student pilots, sport pilots, and recreational pilots.
  • Frequency: Every five years for pilots under the age of 40 and every two years for those over 40.
  • Requirements: Less extensive examination than the First or Second Class, focusing on general physical health and vision.

Beyond the Basics

In addition to these standard classes, Dr. Marks is also qualified to conduct medical exams for specific aviation activities, such as:

  • Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Medical: For pilots seeking or renewing their ATP certificate.
  • Special Issuance Medical: For pilots with certain medical conditions that may affect their ability to fly.
  • Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) Evaluations: For pilots who require a DAME to issue or renew their medical certificate.
